Quest for perfection

The other day I read the umpteenth article about how drinking (booze) more than one drink a day is bad for you – but that abstaining from drinking is also bad for you (teetolers apparently get sick more than drinkers).

It just got me thinking, not that everything is bad for you (because apparently it is) but that today’s society has become downright obsessed with being the best and healthiest that they can be. Which is kind of funny, since there seems to be nothing but unhealthy overweight slobs out there.

Everywhere you turn you hear that goji berries are the newest superfood, quickly replaced by the acai berry, and that if you consume huge amounts of these foods you can live forever (or that’s what they want you to believe).

Then it’s the sun…oooh skin cancer everywhere, don’t you dare step outside without spf 100 slathered on you every 5 minutes, even if you are just walking to your car. I understand the ozone is thinner now but have we forgotten that people NEED sun and that we are indoors now more than ever (remember the days when we worked in the fields, sans sunscreen for thousands of years). Yes, burning is bad, some people really should avoid the sun at all costs and no you shouldn’t use a tanning bed ever, but frankly I am tired of all these scare tactics.

Same tactics are applied to drinking…more than 5 drinks in a week makes you an alcoholic apparently. Well my family is sadly full of alcoholics, I know what real ones look like this broad term on “binge drinking” isn’t helping anyone. Hello, Jesus freakin’ drank wine…no he didn’t drink a bottle to himself, but I’m sure he had more than ONE glass at the Last Supper (Oh noes, so bad for him, it’ll kill him!).

So we are told to avoid this, don’t drink that (coffee is bad for you, oh wait coffee burns fat, but oh wait it’s bad for your heart but oh wait it has antioxidants), get 8 hours of sleep OR MORE a night (don’t get me started on that one…I mean I personally DO need 8 hours but I don’t think it applies to everyone), and we are bombarded with organic food and superfoods and supersupplements and everything in order to become the healthiest people we can be.

Then we are obsessed with fitness and finding the newest class (pilates boxing? Arm spinning?), doing the newest moves and when we can’t do that, we opt out for dermabrasion, laser therapy, tummy tucks, boob jobs, boob lifts, butt implants, jaw shaving, leg lengthening, cheek implants, lip injections, hair and eyelash extensions, botox, juvaderm, eyebrow toupees (oh I’m sure they exist), etc.

Why now? Why is this whole planet suddenly obsessed with becoming the fittest, healthiest, most perfect people? I mean, this has always existed to an extent but right now you are bombarded with the best ways to have the best everything and then some. It’s crazy, it’s everywhere and I have to ask WHY?

I said that out loud the other day to my bf, musing that it’s happening at a time when the planet is going downhill and if people spent as much time fixing themselves as they do on fixing the planet, we wouldn’t be in such a mess. I am not a huge eco freak….I recycle, I turn off lights and try not to waste water and that’s about it…but it did have me wonder. My boyfriend then said, “It’s like people have realized they can’t save the planet, so they might as well save themselves.”

I don’t know if that’s true or not but you have to admit it’s an interesting connection.

Speaking of perfection, let’s swing the pendulum from “deep thoughts” to “fluff.” The following women are my favourite models…I know they aren’t really huge on the runways (I’m not a fan of a lot of fashion models out there) and I know they are very commercial (ahem, Victorias Secret) but I happen to think each one if amazingly gorgeous (and with healthy, enviable bodies to boot)...these are the classic ones I still appreciate to this day:

Laetitia Casta

Yamila Diaz

Kristy Hume

Josie Maran

Estella Warren

Chandra North

Bridget Hall

The photo of Yamila has inspired me to go look through my old Glamour magazines from 1998 :) And these lovely ladies are my new favourites...

Bar Raefeli

Miranda Kerr

Karolina Kurkova

Carmen Kass

Doutzen Kroes

By the way, I received the most gorgeous agate necklace from Cupcake and Cashmere's Etsy shop the other day - can't wait to show it to you all in tomorrow's post :D

Love all these beauties!

And I am still going by the MDs who say that a glass or two of wine a day is beneficial!

You look fab in that blouse, darling!

I agree completely, there's always some new fad that will magically "fix you" and make you a better person. My mom wants to lose weight, which is awesome, but she's decided that "hooping" (as in hula hooping, which seems to be a huge fitness fad right now) is the only way to go. I can't seem to make her understand that JUST hooping isn't going to make her thin and toned. It's all about variety and trying everything in moderation.
I've also got friends that are all about the "Xango" (mangosteen) fruit right now - claiming that it will make you live longer and cure all of your ailments and give you perfect skin and hair and shed the pounds. They get annoyed with me for being a skeptic - but while I'm sure it IS good for you in some way (it's a fruit after all), there is no such thing as a miracle food/workout/device.

Also, I absolutely love Josie Maran and Miranda Kerr! They are both super gorgeous.

I've always found Doutzen Kroess to being very adorable :) love her wavy loose curls.

The wedges are like walking on clouds, sturdy ones :) during my shoot I felt so comfortable in them, and I can't say that about all of my shoes.... lol

Great post :) It's true that the world seems to be preoccupied with new fads without getting to the root of the problem. People are always reusing and recyling... but they just forget to REDUCE in the first place!

Love the model choices too, especially Doutzen! You look gorgeous in the photo :) lighting!!

It's true, you're supposed to do the 3 R's in order: reduce first, then reuse and recylce next. You are simply gorgeous, the light makes you look so so pretty :) Your bf has some deep thoughts, guess that's why he's a musician haha!

Love your hair here!
Thank you for your lovely comments!
To answer your question about my friend's hair, as you might have notice, wr're both sporting rather elaborate dos. We were at an event before so our hair was done by professionals.
But what the hairdresser did with Nubia's hair is role it around a string then attached it at the back.
But she has tried reacreating this several and hasn't really succeeded...
Give it a shot!
That would look lovely one you.
xx.

Love all those ladies! Especially Doutzen! I gotta say I'm a big fan of Petra Nemcova too and Natalia Vodianova and my newest fav. is Chanel Iman (so gorgeous) ha ha. I love your classic pics though.

AND I'm with Couture Carrie-- two glasses of wine a day is beneficial.

I'm addicted to coffee and no one no matter what they say is going to make me stop drinking coffee!

Love the blouse A LOT! The back is smoking hott!

So very true on all counts.

Was Karolina Kurkova the one they recently were giving a hard time because she had shock horror back fat???? What an absolute disgrace that a woman with a body like that would be called fat. She has the sort of body we all dream of having and I'd much rather see clothes modelled on a woman with the 3 b's - boobs, belly and bum! I don't want to see clothes modelled on anorexic 14 year olds -I want to see how the clothes look on a real woman! End of rant.

I completely agree with all the "fad" crap. I think it takes serious determination and it also takes a lifestyle that doesn't bring added stress or depression. As someone who's gone way up and has starting coming down (30 lost 30 to go) I think the key to working out isn't the fad crap, it's hard freakin' work. As kickboxing instructor yelled the other day, "Don't stop! It's ALL in your mind....so CHANGE YOUR F*&^ing MIND!"
As far as healthy eating goes...don't eat crap food that was "invented" in a lab somewhere.
And the booze...well...a glass of wine or two I agree with, but stay away from the brewskies!!

Hey you,

Omg, it's like you read my mind. I don't understand peoples obsession with perfection and complete paranoia with everything healthy. It's like the entire planet turned into generic and supper obsessive freaks. In few years, we are also going to look alike... ooh hold on, it's true even for today.

Today's society and ideals bother me, I refuse to adapt them and if that makes me a social freak then that is what I shall be. I also try to stay away from fashion magazines, how much longer are women going to be dictated how to look and dress...I'll take Times over Vogue any day.

Wow, you sparked quite an anger uprising in me :) lol What has our society come to?

Anyways, I would write a book on this topic, lol.

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

I try not to get too involved in the next quick fix. Long ago I realized that to lose weight you have to eat well and less and exercise more. Hard work and dedication. No magic pill. That is why I am not the size I want to be. :)
