Inspired by: Mr. Bungle

Confession: I used to hate Mr. Bungle.

Back in high school, I wrote them off as too bizarre and far too weird for my tastes. Granted, I had only heard their CD Disco Volante, which is still bordering on being too bizarre and weird for me. Also, I had yet to experience the genius that is Mike Patton, so obviously I didn't "get" it.

But as my appreciation for Faith No More grew and then branched out into a full-fledged obsession with anything Patton touched, I decided to give Bungle another try.

After all, Patton started Mr. Bungle in high school - and even when he was called in to be the lead singer of Faith No More in 1989, he said ok ONLY if he could still continue with Mr. Bungle.

I started with their last CD and the most accessible one, California, released in 1999. It has been described as "psychotic lounge music" or "the Beach Boys on acid."

I had already heard the CD in my bf's car once. First thought: "What is this weirdass bullshit? Turn it off!"

I heard it again a few weeks later, "This is fucking weird, crazy ass circus music on the beach acid trip."

Then I listened to it 6 months later, "So damn weird, but hmmm I really love that Pink Cigarette song."

Fourth time I listened to it: "Love song number one too. Hate that creepy circus freak sounds song though."

Fifth time listening to it: "Love Retrovertigo. Love None of them Knew they were Robots. Love that freaky circus song."

Sixth time and beyond: "One of my top 10 favourite albums of all time Ev0r."

Yep, I finally "got" it and the result is musical crack. I've been listening to this album at least twice a day for weeks now and as a result, I think I'm losing touch with my sanity.

Mr. Bungle is not for everyone, obviously...

The music is bizarre, lots of weird noises, it switches tempo, the song structure constantly changes. Often there are no choruses, no bridges, no repetition. Patton alternates between Elvis-like drawls to screaming to Beach Boys harmonies. You'll be listening to a fast song, then it becomes a slow song. Then suddenly it sounds like cats are singing. Back to slow again and then suddenly monks/indians chanting in a cathedral - then CHAK! chakchakchakchakchakchakchakchakchakchakchakchakchakchakchakchak into acid metal and guitars. That song, for example, is Goodbye Sober Day and I invite you to Youtube it just for kicks. I happen to LOVE it, God knows why.

But even though Mr. Bungle is not for everyone, I think the album California COULD BE and I invite you to watch a few videos from it.

To start, here is the first 'Fanmade' video. I don't believe Mr. Bungle released any vids, and if they did Warners hold on Youtube would get in the way, but ingenius fans have made their own.

This is for Pink Cigarette. It is an amazing song and the video is a work of art - kudos to the fan who made it. Very David Lynch-ish and just a perfect fit:

"How can I forget that your lips were there
Your kiss goes everywhere
Touches everything
But me"

Next up, another fanmade video for another brutally awesome song (my favourite Bungle song), Retrovertigo.

This video is bloody but brilliant. The song is haunting and gorgeous.

Please watch. It will leave you speechless. Especially at the 3-min mark - when Jesus comes in.

"Sell the rights
To your blight
And you'll eat"

I can't believe how devoted and talented Mr. Bungle fans are...love it.

And for a taste of more "Bungle-esque" weirdness (but genius) here is Mr. Bungle playing live another of my favs, The Air-conditioned Nightmare, at the aptly named Bizarre Festival- I am impressed at how well they are able to play this song live:

How can you not "Mbap bap bap mbap bap bap" bounce along to this song with Mike? So fun!!! Makes me wanna dance right now.

"Birds and faeries
Sanctuaries
Atop the rolling hills of Hell"

So, how do I dress inspired by Mr. Bungle?

Well, like a f*ing weirdo, what else?

The tights, pants and jacket were all "circus" to me. The mask because Mr. Bungle used to play with clown masks on (in order to stay anonymous). The black lacey top was dark and the pink corset was retro. Pluto because he represents California. And he's cute. Just like Mike.

Perricone Giveaway

Hi y'all.

This week's giveaway is an amazing one - not only because it's brought to you by the famous Perricone skin care brand, but because it addresses the main skin issue that I myself have: large pores.

Perricone M.D. is well-regarded for its innovative approach to skin care. One of its main ingredients is DMAE or Dimethylaminoethanol,an antioxidant membrane stabilizer. When taken orally or applied topically, it helps to firm, smoothe, and brighten skin. It also enhances the effects of other antioxidants like alpha lipoic acid and Vitamin C ester. As a result, DMAE works best when used in combination with other nutrients and an antioxidant base.

I myself have been taking this orally for the last couple of months and it is working wonders on me - I have been happier, I'm suffering less distractions (sometimes I think I am borderline ADD) and I feel good knowing that the oil is helping my brain and heart function.

So I can only imagine how great this supplement is when used topically in a skin care product.

The item I am giving away is the Skin Clearing Cleanser, which addresses the problem of large pores. If you are anything like me, you have to deal with oily skin, breakouts and the appearance of large pores - it is a daily struggle for me, and despite assumptions, one does not always look their oily skin as they sink deeper into adulthood.

This deep-cleaning acne cleanser helps to clear troubled skin by reducing excess sebum and eliminating surface contamination's. Skin Clear Cleanser contains the anti-aging ingredient DMAE, which helps to firm and tone skin. Green Tea Extract calms and clarifies while Allantoin helps encourage skin renewal. Click here for
pore refining tips.

I hope to have a sample of this soon to try out myself ( I NEED IT) but in the meantime, one lucky Anywhere But Here reader gets a bottle all to themselves.

To enter this fab giveaway you must:

A) Reside in the US (sorry!)

B)Leave a relevant comment, preferably let me know what skin conditions ail you the most. What has worked for you and what hasn't? (For example, I can tell you that drugstore acne medication does NOT work on me).

Good luck everyone! This contest will run until Friday, October 16th.

And now, back to me:)

Thanks for all your questions on the last post - I was afraid no one was going to ask and I'd consequently look like a big loser. If you wanna know more, just keep asking!

What do you do professionally?
I am a marketing/communications assistant for a global engineering firm (name ommited, but it is - according to wikipedia - is one of the world's largest engineering and architectural design firms, ranked number two by Engineering News-Record and number one by Architectural Record. It has more than 43,000 employees in more than 100 countries and is ranked number 458 on the Fortune 500 list).

I work from 8-430, Monday to Friday. I just had my one-year anniversary on October 1st, which makes it the longest job I have ever had. I tend to bail after 6 months - I need variety! I would have quit long ago but in this economy, I should be grateful I have a steady, well-paying job with benefits...even though it bores me to tears. But there are positions opening up where I will get to focus on more writing and PR stuff - my journalism degree finally coming in handy. At the moment I do write (company blog) but there's a lot of inane admin crap as well that I deal with. If I don't move up by March, I'll actually be laid off (my position is becoming obsolete) - which I am looking forward to...EI baby!

What do you do in your down time, hobbies other than fashion?
Write. At the moment, I probably write for 3 hours a day. Read...I have four books I am dabbling in at the moment: Wizard and Glass from The Dark Tower Series, Free Food for Millionaires, The List of Seven and Veronica. Also read tons of magazines and blogs. I listen to music, constantly. I ride my bike. I watch DVD's with my bf. On Sundays I watch Simpsons, Cleveland Show, Family Guy and American Dad (that's the only TV I watch religiously...until Lost comes back on). I eat. Surf the internet. Shop online. Plan vacations. Make love, haha. Oh...and blogging!

What is your signature alcoholic beverage?
Why, the Caesar, of course!

What has been your motivation to keep up with the blog for all of the four years?
Wow - good question! Years ago I would have said validation. Now it's because I like to share...and I feel like this blog will come in handy someday. For what, I don't know...

When are you coming back to Australia?
Eek. No idea. I would love to go back - I am sad that I missed the West Coast entirely. I'll probably return in the next 5-8 years :)

Why are you so cool? ;)
You must have me mistaken with someone else.

How tall are you?
Average, on the side of short. I am technically 5'5" and 3/4, but with my posture it's less rather than more.

Which country are you craving to visit but haven't had the chance to do so yet?
Hmmmm. Botswana. Argentina. Brazil. Chile. Zimbabwe. Morrocco.

What is it that you're writing everyday? Is it a novel / fiction, autobiography, screenplay?? And will we ever get to read some of it? :)
It's a novel...well, will be the first in a series of novels. It is my first novel too, I have only written screenplays before. It is a whole different ballgame, let me tell you. With screenplays I follow a very rigid structure and can bang out 110 pages in a few weeks. This will take me a lot longer but I'm keeping on. I'm at 16,000 words already, don't think I've ever written so much!

Yes, you probably will get to read it. One day. If you wish :)

Favorite Beatles song?
Do you know how hard that question is?? It is actually impossible for me to answer...but the first three songs that popped into my head were: Something, Yesterday, Ticket to Ride.

Can you tell us about your travels?
Well, I've been to a lot of places with my family growing up...our usual haunts were Palm Springs, Maui, Mexico, Norway and Finland.

When I turned 18 I started doing solo backpacking...started with New Zealand, then Australia, then did a stint around Europe for 3 months, then went back to Spain to teach English, then went to Italy to teach English...went to France and Scotland and Mexico somewhere in between there too. And Maui again. And Palm Springs several times more. And Disneyland - been there 4x since 2000. Love Disneyland.

Next up: New Zealand (in 45 days) for a month, then Sweden (and Norway or Finland) in July. Might join my dad as crew on his boat in August when he sails it down from Vancouver to Mexico, again.

You said you grew up all over- is that what gave you your wanderlust? Well my one-word answer might have been misleading...I grew up all over the lower mainland of Vancouver. Born in Richmond...then lived in Point Grey...then in West Vancouver...then in Bowen Island...then in Tsawwassen....then in New Zealand...then in Kamloops...then in Downtown Vancouver...and now in Tsawwassen, again.

I don't know if that contributed to my wanderlust but having foreign parents who love to travel (my mother was a flight attendant with Air Canada for 30-years) definitely helped. I know moving around a lot has left me very adaptable and independent - two qualities about myself that I cherish above all else.

Most embarrassing moment?
I've had many.

This one takes the cake, though.

I was in Rome, taking the train from the hotel to the airport. I had my big ol' backpack and was wearing this new dress and boots that I had bought. I walked off the train and walked through the station and into the airport. I got on the moving walkway and stood there for a bit. I'd probably been on the move for 10 minutes.

I had noticed, though, that many people would turn around and look at me as they walked past. I figured it's because I was blonde and in Italy...no brainer.

So I'm standing there and these American girls tap me on the shoulder as they walk past. One leans in and whispers in my ear.

"Excuse me, but your dress is tucked up into your backpack."

They ran off, giggling. In horror I reach back and realize, yes, my dress is tucked up in my backpack, meaning my bare ass (I was wearing a thong) was hanging out in FULL display for the whole world to see for the last 10 minutes.

Utter mortification. Ironically, I had done this before, in a bar in Lyon, France...unknowingly tucked my skirt in my underwear and paraded past a group of guys.

Understandably, I'm very paranoid about this now.

Seven days

Not whispered ominously through a scratchy telephone, but yes seven days have passed since I decided to try out my "30 day challenge."

Off the bat, I must say the excercising component didn't really pan out. But I'm OK with that - the exercise was the thing I wanted to change yes, but more on the suggestion that I SHOULD excercise, no matter what it going on in my life.

They do say that if you wish to make a habit stick, you should only focus on ONE habit to change. Multi-tasking is a big no-no. So after realizing that I would rather do one thing well than two things poorly, I decided that exercise will happen when it happens. And it still does, just not everyday. That is something to tackle next month, I have decided.

But of course, the good news is that my other habit has stuck (thus far anyway - still have 23 days to go). Since last Thursday I have gotten up every morning to write at 6AM. Somedays I continue writing throughout the day (while at work) or for an hour in the evening. Somedays I just write in the morning and be done with it. I even look forward to 6AM, even though it pains me to actually get out of bed, I have developed a nice ritual where I put on my robe, get a cup of strong coffee, sit at the kitchen table and write till seven. Sometimes it's just a sentence or two, sometimes it's a lot more.

But throughout it all, I now find myself 180 degrees from where I was last week. This last week I have been HAPPY. I have shown more patience. I have been kinder. I have constant energy and adrenaline running through my bones. I have even lost some weight (I think) - not through any effort but because I am so IN LOVE that I don't have the time nor want to eat. What am I in love with? A story, my story, and hope. Hope changes everything and plucks you down right where you need to be. And, 7,900 words later - I have found a purpose and completed 10% of my goal.

"It won't begin until you make it end
Until you know the how, the where, and the when
With a new face you might surprise yourself--" M.Patton

It's super dark now in the mornings - especially at my new wakeup time - and I've discovered that hasty dressing in the dark isn't always the best idea. However I think yesterday it all worked out somehow, even though my tights were not brown as I had thought (my boots are brown, as is the skirt, in case you can't tell). Time to start picking out my clothes the night before!

I had read Eyeliah's post about vintage cardigans she wanted from Etsy and remembered my 50's orlon cardigan I picked up a vintage store back in 2001 when I went through my EPIC vintage clothing phase. I was going for a 50's feel but it ended up being a little more Mod, no?

Garter belts for the modern woman

I totally forgot about my old obsession with wearing garter belts. I used to wear them all the time a few years back and then sort of stopped for reasons I am unsure of - at any rate, my boyfriend brought up the other day that he loves seeing me in my garter belt stockings and that was all I needed to take my babies for another spin.

I've done a post on this before - back in 2006 or 2007 (YES this blog is THAT old) - but for the sake of everyone new (and the fact that I still get at least 10 hits a day of people googling "garter belts") I'll repost it.

"Retro Whore":

That got your attention didn't it?

A few years ago I really got into the whole retro look. This is when my love affair with classic films started, which then led me on to reading retro books (like Raymond Chandler and Daphne Du Maurier...so good), listening to retro music (who doesn't like Billie Holiday or Frank Sinatra?), idolizing retro people (hello Rita Hayworth), purchasing retro photographs and artwork (just take a look around my apartment) and wearing retro clothes.

Being a curvy woman myself, I found comfort in harking back to the Golden Era, when women were aloud to be women and not stick figures. The hourglass shape was revered and women were encouraged to dress feminine, to enhance their womanly figure. Cute pumps, fitted dresses, rhinestone jewlery, vintage handbags...these were all the things I coveted and I spent a good part of my paycheck on them.

But one thing I didn't buy into at the time was lingerie.

Not just any lingerie, but thigh-high stockings, garter belts and corsets. The whole shebang.

Of course, back then I was single and a bit younger, so the lure of lingerie wasn't really calling me.

But now, all that has changed.

Every year I go through a bit of an Ebay binge and last month was no exception. Aside from getting some primo bargains (which I will blog about later), I decided to embrace the retro whore look.

I bought corsets...and not the ones you would wear out to the club (Lord knows I have those too). I bought garter belts in black, red, white with matching undies. And I bought black thigh highs to attach to my garters.

Today I went out to run some errands wearing a wrap dress. Little did people know that underneath that dress (and underneath the huge coat) my black stockings were held up by a garter belt. It made me feel sexy and mysterious. And very, very ladylike.

Garter belts are an amazing invention. Personally, I hate stockings because the control top usually sucks the life out of you, leaves you with lumps and bumps and it's a pain to get off. I know all you women will agree but it's not very, erm, "accessible" if you want to get busy (if you know what I mean, and I think you do). Strike while the iron's hot, I always say, and when it takes you five minutes to wiggle out of your hose (and in the most unflattering way) the iron is usually cold.

The only complaint I have about garter belts is that sometimes you have to constantly adjust the belts in order to hold your stockings up.

Which is why I purchashed this brilliant invention that you see to your right:

This pair of rocking fishnet stockings come with the garter attached, so you just slip them on and forget about them.

I bought two pairs, the one shown and one sheer black with a seam running up the back.

Of course the minute I tried on the sheer pair I snagged the darn things on a raspy fingernail and now I can't wear them.

The stockings may make me look like a lady but my nails say otherwise.

And here of course, is me wearing them yesterday. Don't mind the fact that the metallic navy bag does not match the black - I was matching for the quilting quality (my boots are quilted as well).

Alter Ego

In case you didn't know, I'm doing a Forever 21 giveaway for a $20 E-gift certificate. To enter, please click on this post here and comment, or scroll down!

In continuation of my FNM-inspired post below, later that night I decided to keep my alter ego alive and take her to my boyfriend's band's concert. I added a kicky beret to match my beloved Chloe boots and felt very avante garde, dangereux and French. No one really recognized me, which I got a kick out of, and I totally felt bitchier than normal. Which was a suprisingly good thing - I sneered at most men I saw, and this time it fit the character!

What was really fun to see was some people giving my bf the stink eye when I started hanging off of him. They were mighty relieved to see it was actually me, and not some random. Most of my friends didn't even make eye contact with me, they thought I was some stranger...I guess the last time most people saw me was when I looked like this:

And that night, I looked like this:

Skirt: ASOS
Hat: Forever 21
Top: Zara
Jacket: Forever 21
Cardigan: ASOS
Boots: See by Chloe

The Saint's Collapse

Rythm Guitarist aka bf

Drummer Extraordinaire aka Captain Party

Lead Guitarist aka General Pattullo

Bassist aka David Usher

Singer aka Gold Teef for Erbody

For those that were asking about the band (The Saints Collapse) last post, you can listen/buy their tunes from iTunes, CDbaby, Amazon, etc.

Stream them here first on their Myspace page.

If you're at a show, you can pick up their CD or amazing poster drawn by the talented Jesse Castillo (nee Barber). He can sing, write music and is one bad ass artist (just wait for there first video - totally animated in Flash, it will blow you away).

Or just watch them on Youtube!

Last year they did a rad cover of Dick in the Box, where the singer's brother joined him on stage for that special song. Hilarious.

Anyway, if you like them or know someone who would, show me a little love and lets spread the band around. The Vancouver music scene is notoriously difficult for live shows, especially if you are in rock, so it's hard to get the word out, unless you are totally mainstream (and suck balls, imo) like Theory of a Deadman and Nickleback (sorry Amanda, I know your cousin is in Theory of a Deadman...:P).

PS - I should mention that I went to this show instead of my TEN YEAR HIGH SCHOOL REUNION! Can't believe I have been out of high school since 1999!!!!!!!!

Inspired By: Faith No More + F21 Giveaway!

Faith No More is the most AMAZINGLY underated band that ever lived.

And I can gaurantee that 75% of you will have never heard of them before. I'm not saying this cuz you all ain't cool (YOU ARE =), it's just the band isn't and wasn't very well-known for some reason (depending what circles you hang out with, of course).

But there's nothing better than discovering a band/music that's new to YOU!

And if you have heard of them, you probably only know them from the Red Hot Chili Peppers-esque song: Epic. The song was a huge hit back in the early 90's, however I happen to think it is one of their worst songs, and after hearing the rest of what they have to offer, I think you will agree.

Faith No More really came into their own when Mr. Bungle singer Mike Patton took over as lead singer at the tender age of 21.

Just look at this baby face!

MIKE PATTON Pictures, Images and Photos

Mike Patton Pictures, Images and Photos

Mike Patton is the most versatile singer to ever live.

I am not exagerating. This man can do it all, as evidenced by this quote:

Aside from Faith No More (which recently reunited - THANK GOD - after 10 years), Patton helms other bands and project such as Peeping Tom, Lovage, Tomhahawk, Fantomas, General Patton VS the Executioners and of course, Mr. Bungle (and you thought YOU had a lot of side projects going on!). I will actually devote another post purely to Mr. Patton himself and his awesomeness (great outfit inspirations there) but for now I will focus just on Faith No More. When I show you what he can do outside of FNM, you will be gobsmacked. Srsly.

Aside from Mr. Patton's smoking hot good looks and outstandingly versatile voice, I love Faith No More because of how much soul and atmosphere the band's music has. And the fact that they rock my face off -literally. Loud and proud but with melody and range.

Though FNM is classified as metal - Patton can scream his F*ing head off like no one's business - the band also dabbles in trip hop, lounge music, jazz, rock, punk and even pop. My favourite FNM songs are Ashes to Ashes, Everything's Ruined, Last to Know, Just a Man, From out of Nowhere, Last Cup of Sorrow (the video I have on my blog post HERE), King for a Day, Stripsearch, A Small Victory, Midlife Crisis, Crack Hitler, Absolute Zero, to name a few lol.

Here's the gamut of what they can do - please watch them all or at last most to get an idea. It's worth it, I promise.

Here they are doing a cover of "I started a joke" by the BeeGees, this is a perfect example of how this man CAN SING and live too. At least watch till 1:20, though the notes he hits at the end, wow. Gives me goosebumps.

So that proves that he can sing - and they can do the loungey thing. LIVE!

The sexy, moody sounds of Stripsearch might sound familiar to you - I've been playing a short clip of it on my blog for the last few days. BTW that item they show on the table at the end is a grenade....it's kind of hard to tell.

How about we look back at the hilariously bad video from Patton and FNM's early days, "Everything's Ruined" - this video is so bad and crazy on purpose, it's worth a look regardless. Plus it's one of my favourite songs and really showcases their original funk metal sound (that influenced SO many bands afterwards):

I love where they pretend to be airplanes and then get attacked by a giant turtle at the 2:40 mark - looks like they had a lot of fun. Despite the title, this song and video always makes me happy.

AND if you haven't watched any of these videos, just watch THIS ONE, playing "Ashes to Ashes" at Cannes, which was described by Bassist Billy Gould as "one of those songs that just clicked -- one of those songs that we do most naturally. That's our sound."

DAMN he's one sexy man. And the fact that he can sing definitely helps. Or maybe it's the other way around. No other man's voice has ever made me wanna take my clothes off like his.

Anyway, there is more to FNM than Mike Patton - the entire band (though they have moved around a lot with lots of switching) is a jovial bunch. I enjoy following Keyboardist Roddy Bottum on Twitter and reading his appreciative updates while on tour. Billy Gould is a good sport, willing to dress up like a woman for the Last Cup of Sorrow video and how can you not like a drummer named "Puffy" with the most awesome dreads in the world? Plus Roddy, the keyboardist, is one talented dude. I think his keyboard sounds are what really make the band stand apart. Every rock band needs a keyboardist, damnit!

Faith No More are currently on their world tour, hitting South America over the next two months and then Australia for the Soundwave festival in Feb. They have yet to come to North America.

I swear, even if the closest they get to Vancouver is LA, I am GOING! There are only two bands I would fly roughly anywhere for and Faith No More is one of them (the other is Led Zeppelin. DAMN YOU ROBERT PLANT!).

And so with much ado, here is my inspired by Faith No More outfit that I almost ended up wearing to my boyfriend's concert that night (coincidently the closest band that my bf's music sounds like is FNM, no wonder I like them). I still wore the skirt and top but added a red beret and boots and...well, you'll see next post ;P

I thought my Jeffrey Campbell boots had the perfect 90's vibe (though not as flash as the Opening Ceremony ones, they are much cheaper!), as did the cargo skirt.

Top: Zara

Skirt: ASOS

Vest: Target

Boots: Jeffrey Campbell

Necklace: ASOS

And yes, that is wig :P and yes I wore it out that night - why not? I enjoy having an alter ego. But more on that next post :P

OH and of course, a giveaway! Because I LOVE MY READERS!!!! In one week I will do a draw for a $20 E-gift certificate to Forever 21 (open to everyone as long as F21 ships there). That could get you some good stuff!

To enter, just tell me what you thought about this post/the music/the outfit or what band would you do anything to see?

And if you have been lucky enough to see them this summer...tell me about it so I may live vicariously through you!

GOOD LUCK!!

Addendum - Sept 28: Faith No More just added Wellington and Auckland New Zealand shows for February. I am heartbroken that I will miss them by two months :(
