Viking Pride + ETSY GIVEAWAY!

While the Winter Olympics are slowly coming to an end, that doesn't mean I don't have lots more to share with you. As you can guess, I've been busy, busy, busy lately. I had no idea really what having the Games in my hometown would mean and MAN was I ever in for a surprise. Suddenly, Vancouver the "no fun" city is OFF THE HOOK!

Anyway, I'll be posting about my favourite moments, thoughts and surprises on the games next week, when I have time to detox and breathe. I'll also be posting my fashion countdown for all you fashionistas - for 15 days straight I have worn nothing but Red and White in honour of the Canadian flag. Lemme tell you...that ain't easy.

The only time I wore something different was when I went to the Norway VS Slovakia game with fellow blogger Eyeliah.

I really wanted to go to an Olympic event, but tickets are pricey and hard to find, and I don't trust scalpers. I really wanted to go see a Norway even with my father since he a true Viking from Norway (his name is Sven) but he was sick. Luckily Eyeliah had an extra ticket to the hockey game that evening and I WAS IN!

In honour of my Scandinavian heritage (my mother is Finnish), I wore Blue and Red for the Norwegian flag AND my father's Viking Helmet.

You want attention? Wear a viking helmet. I was probably approached by 20 people wanting a picture with me. People were hollering "Go Norway!" or "Yeah Viking!" or "Are you horny?" - It was a fabulous night.

Of course, Norway lost to Slovakia but considering that none of the players on Team Norway are pros (they all have real jobs like fishermen and carpenters) they actually played very well and the score was very close.

And what would the games be without MORE controversy.

The American media (more notably the horrible writers for Yahoo, of whose articles I can't help but shake my head at everytime I check my email) is suggesting that the Canadian Women's hockey team give up their Gold medal to the USA because of the way the ladies celebrated on the ice after the win.

They drank beer and champagne and smoked cigars on the ice and now the IOC is "investigating" it.

WHO FUCKING CARES? First of all, to the IOC, why you gotta be so uptight? Sure, I understand it isn't very classy but these are women hockey players, did you expect politeness and manners from them? I understand you gotta say, "we don't approve" and fair enough. But why make the stink? We apologized and yes, they should stayed in their dressing rooms, but they didn't. What is the big deal?

And to the US Media saying "OOoh, this isn't fair, the USA deserve Gold now" I say "I'm sorry, we still beat you 2-0. What we did after the game has nothing to do with you...ALSO there was no disrespecting of the USA Team at all. Did you hear the Canadians clapping and cheering for the USA Team when they got their medals? Do you not remember when YOUR US Women's hockey team SKATED over our Canadian flag in the other Olympics? Sheesh."

And finally to the stupid commentors on Yahoo, one of whom said "What kind of women would smoke cigars and drink beer like that? Are they all Lumberjacks up there in Canada," I say, "If drinking beer and smoking cigars after winning Gold makes me a lumberjack, then we are the coolest lumberjacks ever."

Anyway, it's not the Games without controvery but it's pretty amazing how badly the US Media bashes us at every chance they get. So many double-standards, it's not even funny. People need to relax, chill out and enjoy the games. Or as this picture says:

I know I say this all the time in comments, but you are too much fun. Love those red pants and your freakin' awesome viking hat!!

Sorry about the American media BS... being an American and all, that's just embarrassing.

Wanderlusting said...

Thanks J,

Luckily most Americans that I personally know aren't saying that, it's just some anonymous hater's comments and some media. It's just hard when we've been shit upon everyday during these games. Give us a break, EH??

Wanderlusting said...

OH and before someone says that the big stink was because an underage player was drinking beer: that player, Poulin, who scored both winning goals, is 18 and legal in her home province of Quebec, as well as in a few other Canadian provinces.

L. said...

Oh you look like you had so much fun!!! Whenever I go to NJ Devils games I always wear flashing red horns =)

IOC suck!

Wanderlusting said...

THEY DO!

AND they STILL won't let women take part in Ski-Jumping...what is the deal with that???

AHA I love that Haters Gonna Hate picture. (:

I hate the American BS. Fuck them.

I watched them win the gold medal, and I cried.

I watched Joannie Rochette win her bronze medal and I BALLED my eyes out.

I don't want the Olympics to end, because I love how well we're doing.

Go Canada!

Ps. you're so lucky to live in Van right now. I am moving there in a few years hopefully. (:

You know, not just anyone can pull off that Viking helmet look, but you being the real deal, you look fabulous in it! With your flowing golden hair, you could be the female Thor!

I didn't recall that our women skated over your flag at some point. That's pretty low-class. And I can't argue with you that our media is crappy and biased. Hell, sometimes I get on Twitter just to find out what's going on in the world. It's more accurate than our news most of the time. And more fun.

As bad as we've been bitching about your players smoking cigars and drinking on the ice, the crap our players are going to have to deal with for not winning gold will be worse. We always seem to take a giant dump on our own athletes when they get a medal that isn't gold. Win nothing at all and we're fine with that. But get a silver and oh my God, we're going to bitch you out for the next four years until you're so stressed out by the time you get another shot that you choke. That's what we did to our favorite female snowboarder for daring to make a mistake and end up with a silver when she had an easy gold last time. So this time she choked and failed to even qualify for the finals. If we had just congratulated her on silver and left her alone she'd probably have done fine. But we can't do that. We're Americans. We whine and bitch and complain about everything. It's what we do. We're practically French.

I thought that the Canadians womens celebration was awesome. I am one of the biggest "sore winners" around, and it seemed like something I would do. They won, and they deserved to celebrate like it.

The mens game on Sunday should be interesting... I can't wait.

And yes, I will be booing Canada the entire time, but please don't take offense. I would be booing whomever the US was playing. ;-)

Wanderlusting said...

Steve - well-said with some good points!

Stormin - no offense taken, it would be weird if you were cheering for us haha. Booing is what we do during hockey to any opposing team.

Do note though, most of the time when it sounds like we are booing, we are actually saying "Luuuuu" for our goalie. It's what Canucks fans do and it's caught on :)

I've LOVED the Olympics; so jealous of you being in the midst of it all.

Ya Canada!!!! I hate the media attacking them, they DESERVED to celebrate.

Can't wait for the game tomorrow night!

Tomorrow is going to be insane. Your viking hat is wicked awesome! I'vfe had to ignore all the press as it was making me sooo angry. Luckily a lot of articles have come to our defense after the British media attacked us.. I've read some amazing articles about our province that makes me soo happy :) I've thoroughly enjoyed this whole olympic thing and the way the city has come alive.

love hearing all of your olympic stories! haha .. i'd like to enter the contest too

Bah! Still so jealous over you actually getting to experience the Olympics....
Thankfully the whole women drinking and smoking cigars controversy has calmed down by now because people responded to the media with 'who cares?'. So stupid, Jon Montgomery's stroll with a pitcher is The Moment of the games and the women are forced to apologize? I'm not hating on Montgomery, he's too adorable, I'd run away with that!!!
Haha, glad you had fun! Now detox and post more, i wanna hear more...

Etsy, ummm yes please!

Please tell me your viking helmet is available on the shop. That would make my life.

And I'm sad the Olympics are over, but my liver is happy to have a rest. It was fun drinking with you :)

Your pictures are too cute. I know the US media isn't exactly friendly when it comes to coverage, but even though I am an American, I was really happy for the Canadians to win both hockey games and I actually thought the American women's hockey team did a horrid job at being good sports after they lost. I was like why aren't you at least smiling you one silver for cripes sake. I just thought it was kind of unsportsman like and mildly disrespectful, if you gonna get beat you might as well get beat by a team worth playing! OH that last picture if HILARIOUS!

the thing that's pissing me off the most about how people are bashing the canadian women (not just the US! the freaking IOC!?!) is that if they were men NO ONE WOULD HAVE SAID ANYTHING. but they're women, so they're not allowed to drink or smoke in public!? next think you know, they're going to want to vote! or wear pants! sheesh!
